Hello and welcome to my first ever blog post on Spillology.com!
While I was thinking about what I was going to make my first post about, I stumbled upon this new Netflix series: “Wednesday”.
It is based upon the character Wednesday Addams from “The Addams family”. I think most of you will recognize this horrifying but lovely family.
For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, let me tell you about them.
It is a fictional family originally created by the American cartoonist Charles Addams. Since then, “The Addams family” has been brought to life on screen as well as on stage in the form of a musical.
Personally, I first got to know this unique family when my parents bought the DVD of the 1991 released film “The Addams family”.
Immediately, I fell in love with the bizarre characters and the eccentric family dynamic.
The love of the father and the mother, Gomez and Morticia (then played by Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston), fascinated me and Wednesday’s (then played by Christina Ricci) self-assurance was and still is impressive.
Safe to say that I was pretty excited when I heard that Netflix was working on a modern adaptation of the Addams family. Also, one of my favorite directors, Tim Burton, worked on this new series too.
The series is set in our time and is about Wednesday, who is played by the talented Jenna Ortega.
Wednesday is being sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts and monsters, by her parents after causing a lot of trouble at her old and relatively “normal” high school. Gomez and Morticia once also attended this school, and they promise her that she will have “the time of her life” there.
Now, Wednesday is a more pessimistic and grim character, and she doesn’t like it when others tell her what to do. First, she is set on escaping from Nevermore, but soon she finds herself in the midst of a murder mystery which she is then trying to solve. The ending is really unexpected, but you will have to watch the show yourself. 😉
While the series is quite different from the 1991 released film, the core essence of the Addams family stays the same, and I enjoyed watching one of my favorite cinematic characters come to life in a more modern adaptation.
Wednesday isn’t your usual “coming-of-age-Netflix” teenager. She isn’t popular but unlike most teen characters in this genre, she has absolutely no desire to change that. She is unapologetically herself, and she doesn’t let anyone change that.
While watching the series, I find myself wanting to be a little more like her. (Some) people do and change so much of themselves in order to be liked by the people around them; and sometimes I do that too. However, Wednesday’s genuineness and confidence is what makes her so likable and attractive.
Almost always, it is better to stay true to yourself and to stop trying to squeeze yourself into the “normie”-box. That way, you will also find people who like you for your authentic self.
“Wednesday” is definitely worth a watch and Jenna Ortega’s acting is very pleasant to watch, so give it a try!
